Programs of Study

Performance Based Diploma Program (PBD)

Students may enter, by application, the PBD Program and earn a high school diploma. This program is designed as an alternative to the credit-based high school diploma. The performance standards for graduation include three basic components:

  • Pass the (FCAT) Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test
  • Pass the GED
  • Successfully complete six vocational courses, including certification under one area which indicates that the student is proficient for employment in a specific work area

One major focus of instruction will be on basic skills in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies to prepare students for the FCAT and the GED. The second focus will be on vocational training which will enable students to become certified in a specific vocational skills area which leads to job entry placement and work experience program. A third focus will involve career counseling and acquisition of employability skills. It is important to understand that students in this diploma program are considered as regular students proceeding to a standard diploma. These students are eligible to participate in all activities and electives. Students interested in applying for this program should contact their guidance counselor.

Tech Prep Program - website

The Tech Prep/School-to-Work System is a college preparatory program where the students learn technical skills integrated with academic courses that prepare them for the workplace. Students are encouraged to continue their education at a community college, technical school, or a four-year university.

Students participating in this program obtain career-related experiences in a work-based setting which could include job shadowing, internships, mentoring, and/or cooperative education. Students may qualify for a Vocational Gold Seal Endorsement/Scholarship by meeting the requirements.

The Tech Prep/School-to-Work System is designed to provide to the business community work-ready graduates with the high-tech skills necessary to succeed in today's global environment. It parallels college prep but with an emphasis on technical work-related skills. Curriculum areas offered at Sebastian River High School include Business, Health Occupations, Industrials (Automotive Technology, TV Production, Commercial Foods).

It is important to note that choosing a course of study will not lock the student into that program for the remainder of his/her high school career. It can be changed or altered as necessary to fit the individual's goals.

Tech Prep/School-to-Work is designed so that those who do not follow a university preparatory program will have the necessary math and science courses required to attend many colleges. Those who wish to work after high school will have a skill that can be used to obtain a job. Tech Prep/School-to-Work gives the student more options when he/she graduates.

Exceptional Student Education (ESE)

Students enrolled in the ESE programs may earn credits for a standard diploma, taking the same course of study as general education students. These courses may be taken in general education or in exceptional education classes. English skills classes and math courses offered for exceptional education students follow the same student performance standards as the general education course. Modifications are made on an individual basis as necessary.

To meet the needs of ESE students who need a more functional, vocationally oriented program, a Special Diploma option has been designed. The courses required for the Special Diploma are designed to teach the student those skills needed for everyday life. ESE courses offered for students pursuing a special diploma include English, math, social studies, science, life management, and vocational subjects as well as work experience.
