Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps
Sebastian River High School is one of over 630 schools in our country that offers Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC).This program is designed to develop followership, leadership, citizenship, self-discipline, respect, and responsibility within each cadet (student).
NJROTC provides a safe, family atmosphere where cadets can grow and mature surrounded by excellent peer role models and mentors. Naval Science is a 1-credit elective course which, upon successful completion of a full year, can also fulfill 1/2 credit of Physical Education graduation requirement for each of the first two years in the program (total of 1 credit of PE waived.) Additionally, successfully competition of two years in the program eliminates the HOPE graduation requirement. Uniform items required by the program are provided at no cost to the student outside of normal washing and occasional dry-cleaning.
Extracurricular activities are available through the program free of charge. Team activities include Color Guard, Drill (marching), Air Rifle, Athletic, Orienteering, Physical Fitness and Academic Teams. Cadets may also attend Field Meet competitions with other Florida units, as well as educational field trips to such places as Port Canaveral Coast Guard Station, and Jacksonville and Key West Naval Air Stations. Other activities include Basic Leadership Training Camp (normally held on-campus the third week of the school year), a Navy Ball, a Pass in Review Ceremony, and a formal Awards Banquet.
Participation in NJROTC is voluntary and there is no obligation to military service whatsoever. In fact cadets are strongly encouraged, mentored and assisted in selecting and attending college upon graduation. For those cadets interested in military service, the program can help prepare and assist them in obtaining an appointment to a service academy or an ROTC college scholarship. Cadets who do choose to enlist in the Armed Forces may enter at a higher pay grade after completing basic training.
