How Can I Get Financial Aid or Scholarships for College?

• After December 1, 2011 go to: www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org to apply for Florida Financial Aid such as Bright Futures Scholarships, other scholarships and grants. 

• Before January 31, 2012 go to www.irscfoundation.org  to apply for scholarships if you plan on attending, or might attend Indian River State College. 
• After January 1, 2012 fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Your parents need to complete their taxes before you can fill out this form.  To apply on line go to: www.fafsa.ed.gov. This determines if you are eligible to receive money from federal grant, loan, and work study programs.
• February 1, 2012 - March 15, 2012 go to: www.go-sharks.org to find out what Local Scholarships are offered. Applications will be available on line and sent directly to the patrons. New Reality Maps, including first semester grades, and Counselor Reports will need to be submitted with each application.
• For internet scholarship searches and additional financial aid information go to: www.facts.org,   click on “Paying for College” at the top of the page.
• Be organized!!  Mark application deadlines on your calendar.  The earlier you apply the better your chances are to obtain a scholarship!
• Take the time to write an excellent essay.  Creativity, unique points of view, humor, how you overcome adversity all adds interest to an essay.  Do not forget to proof read and get input from friends and family.
• If you need recommendation letters, choose wisely, select people who know you well and who want to see you succeed.  Give the person plenty of time to complete your letter – at least two weeks.  Provide them with a high school resume so they can incorporate your activities and/or community service into their letter. 
• FAFSA NIGHT January 23, 2012, in the Media Center at SRHS.  Have your parents bring their financial aid paperwork, and we will offer hands-on help for filling out the FAFSA form.
