At Vero Beach High School we offer a number of choral activities. Our performance groups include:
-Women’s Choir: Will not be offered in the 2009-2010 school year at Vero Beach High School, but the women of mixed chorus will be asked to perform certain musical pieces only for women.
-Mixed Chorus: is a compellation of all people of varying talents. This is a great course to take if you are interested in learning to sing. We hit on all kinds of vocal techniques, sight reading/music reading skills, and working together as a team. This choir is non-audition and we’d love to have anybody who would like to sing!
-Freshman Chorus: In the 2009-2010 school year, we will be offering 2 kinds of Freshman chorus.
- The first ensemble will be a NON-Performance Chorus. This group will strictly perform in class and will be expected to sing solos and in small groups. Concerts are not mandatory and neither are any after school rehearsals.
- The second group of Freshman Chorus will be a Performance group. These students will have the opportunity to perform at all of the concerts we will offer here next year. The prerequisite to joining this group is that one MUST have sung in a Middle School Choir.
-Ambassador Choir: is our honors choir that Vero Beach High School has to offer. This group is an AUDITION ONLY group and must be able to basically read music, sight read, and have a great team spirit. Attitude is everything when it comes to this choir. This choir competes on its own at MPA’s and has earned Superiors for many years running. A prerequisite to joining this group is one must be in any Non-Auditioning choir (Mixed chorus, Freshman Chorus, etc.) for at least 1 semester. As the name suggests, the Ambassador Choir is the spokes choir for the Choral Program. Travel in our community for private performances, and local concerts are always a possibility.
-Show Choir: is our extracurricular choir that is more about a whole performance and not just music/singing. This group takes more Pop/Broadway Tunes and performs them both at school and in our community. Students must be involved in some sort of performance class in the music program in order to be involved in this group and must be willing to travel especially around the holiday time. This group also competes at the District and State (if invited), Solo and Ensemble competition. This year the 2008-2009 Show Choir was honored by receiving Superiors and will be attending the State Competition in April being held in Coral Gables. If you’ve got a love for music, come on out and perform with us!
Gregory Harris
Gregory is excited and truly honored to be a part of Vero Beach High School’s Music Program.
Gregory is originally from Hackettstown, New Jersey where he was first bit by the “performance bug”. His performance career began with his first chorus performance in Elementary School, and since then, he was hooked. Gregory continued his choral/acting career through Middle School, performing in their Select Chorus and winning honors for Festival in the Parks in Hershey Park.
He later continued with his love of music in High School where he performed both locally and nationally. Again, performing with his chorus at Festival in the Park, the Pope John XXIII Regional High School attained the highest award “Best Overall Chorus” both years he was involved in the competition. From here, Gregory had made his career choice and studied Music at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He graduated with a Bachelors of Music Degree in Music Theatre and with honors in 2005.
Since then Gregory has worked at Walt Disney World as a Main Street Dancer and at Glendale Elementary School as the General Music Instructor. You might also recognize Gregory from recent productions at the Vero Beach Theatre Guild where he starred in “Hello Dolly”. His lifelong dream of working with High School students is finally coming true and he is extremely excited to be working with some of the most talented students the state of Florida has to offer.
Gregory is a member of the Florida Music Educators Association (FMED), the Florida Vocalist Association (FVA), the National Association for Music Education (MENC), and the American Choral Director Association (ACDA).
Gregory would like to thank his unbelievably supportive family for their encouragement over the long years. Gregory would especially like to send his love to his fellow “Chorus Geek” and beautiful wife, Caitlin, for all the support she has given him throughout the years! F&A.
